Instrument Assisted Soft Tissue Mobilization (IASTM) is a specialized technique used by physical therapists to treat soft-tissue injuries and restrictions. Based on the principles of cross friction massage, IASTM uses specially designed instruments to target specific muscle groups, fascia, and tendons. Here’s everything you need to know about IASTM and how it can benefit you.
What is Instrument Assisted Soft Tissue Mobilization (IASTM)?
IASTM is a skilled myofascial intervention that uses tools typically made of stainless steel with beveled edges and contours. These instruments are designed to penetrate and target specific areas of the body, allowing for precise treatment of muscle groups, fascia, and tendons.
How Does IASTM Work?
- Assessment: The therapist assesses your restrictions to determine if you are a candidate for IASTM.
- Positioning: You will be positioned comfortably, either sitting in a chair or lying down.
- Palpation: The therapist uses their fingers to identify raised scar tissue or trigger points.
- Tool Selection: Based on the muscle group being worked on, the appropriate instrument is selected.
- Treatment: The therapist rubs the instrument against the area parallel to the skin. The contours of the tool allow for deeper penetration to break down scar tissue or release trigger points.
- Follow-up: The tool is sanitized thoroughly. Some stretching or strengthening exercises may follow to further improve joint range of motion (ROM) and performance.
Benefits of IASTM
IASTM is effective in breaking down scar tissue and fascial restrictions that hinder joint ROM or cause pain. The technique provides therapists with a mechanical advantage, allowing for deeper tissue penetration and reducing the overuse of their hands.
Key benefits include:
- Improved joint ROM
- Reduced pain
- Enhanced mobility
- Targeted treatment of specific muscle groups and tendons
Contraindications of IASTM
IASTM may not be suitable for everyone. Contraindications include:
- Open wounds or unhealed suture sites
- Unhealed fractures
- Thrombophlebitis
- Uncontrolled hypertension
- Patient intolerance or hypersensitivity
- Hematomas
- Osteomyelitis
- Myositis ossificans
- Hemophilia
If you have any of these conditions, IASTM may not be recommended for you.
